Ribcrasher launches “On-Off”

The Roots of the band sink far away in 1998, year in which MATTEO VAGO, the founder, decided to build up a band with a strong, rocky and essential sound, free from frills, main feature which even gives the idea of the band’name: you only need only a guitar, cables, PA’s and the ON-OFF switch.

The early years see a continuous alternating of musicians on bass guitar, vocals and drums, but finally in 2000 here’s the first stable line-up and the beginning of a hard mess-tin made of many concerts characterized by covers chosen among AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Beatles sets and, as news for cover-bands of the period, some classic rock’n’roll or blues songs like Chuck Berry, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker or Joe Williams, played in a hard mood!

After all, blues from B.B. King, Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, Yardbirds etc. has always been the base of the inspiration and musical background of the band.

In this period, drums were “beaten&kicked” by SAMUELE SQUAIELLA who, with Fabio Turci and Silvio Bianchi, became one of the “oldest” member of the band.

The beginning of 2001 sees the first important change: ANDREA MASTROGIORGIO joined on vocals and immediately, a few months later, the AC/DC covers became almost integral part of the repertoire. On suggestion of many friends, the band started a project of AC/DC tribute, rather quite new idea for the period, when the major request was for commercial coverband, and at the same time, quite innovative from the “stage” point of view: shows were based on an extremely faithful show-act of the original band, focused on the figure of the school-dressed guitarist ANGUS YOUNG. The band already had the idea of producing their own songs, (after all this was been the aim since the beginning), but it was unanimously decided to momentarily keep on, the tribute project, in order to create the best musical feeling among the members and to grow up a strong experience of live performing on stage.

Besides this, the good stability and the wide range of songs in repertoire was ensuring the necessary time and concentration to enable the starting of a serious work on the unreleased material project. However during the following years, the tribute took more and more place among the appointments of the band, until some “different creative point of view” and personal problems of some members, did start creating some changes to the band’s lne-up (stable up to 2007).

During 2007 and 2008 the drums saw LORENZO MILANI joining the band who has been drummer for U.D.O. and coverband ALTO VOLTAGGIO, and JGOR GIANOLA, U.D.O.’s guitarist and founder of ALTO VOLTAGGIO, as a rhythm guitar in many gigs. The “unreleased songs project” was at this point stand-by, first due to the alternating of musicians, then to Andrea’s decision to exclusively follow the AC/DC tribute, and also for the lack of time available after work. Matteo was keeping on accumulate ideas, riffs, lyrics and arrangements to be used at the right moment, beside the material created during 2005/2006, born always from Teo’s guitar. The end of 2007 sees the joining of the bass player FABIO LAZZARIN into our family, member who became fundamental for the “re-birth” of the band, which reached the stability with the return of SAMUELE SQUAIELLA on drums, then the new entry of DAVIDE BATTISTELLA to the rhythmic guitar makes the new stage to ONOFF to begin at the end of 2008. This last phase of ON-OFF rapresents the definite beginning of the “unreleased songs project”, focused on the production of our own rockin’ songs, in typically Classic Rock style, sung in English, with Matteo on lead guitar and vocals, decision which was taken under the agreement of the whole band, because of the difficulties encountered in finding a new who cold easily join in a just-startedband.

By the way, the fact to have a smaller number of “thinking heads” to be put together” is absolutely a positive feature to keep in mind. The Tribute Band project still exists, (with ANDREA MASTROGIORGIO on vocals), alternating gigs entirely devoted to the AC/DC (marked as “ON-OFF plays AC/DC”) to concerts only dedicated to ON-OFF own production.

At Last 2010 sees the BIRTH of the debut-album of ON-OFF: RIBCRASHER … the rest is under your eyes! ARE YOU READY TO BE BLOWN UP?

Hardcore Circus deliver great melodic hard rock with a lot of attitude. HARDCORE CIRCUS has a very strong line-up.

The act started out as a project in 2009. Joakim Bloohm (Randy Piper’s Animal) & Jorgen Bolmstad (Surround) had MOTLEY CRUE as a common denominator, and for years, they wanted to start a hard rock act with that kind of attitude. They began to write kick-ass songs and made a demo of 16 tracks. From that demo the duo began to pick songs for their debut-album “Wake Up Call“. 10 tracks made it.

Joakim Bloohm drummer of HARDCORE CIRCUS has been working with Chris Laney (Zan Clan, Randy Piper’s Animal, Chris Laney) on the album “Violent New Breed”, Randy Piper’s Animal (WASP). Bloohm is a hard hitting drummer with a lot of tattoos that gives him the perfect kick-ass rock n roll look.

Jorgen Bolmstad lead vocalists and rhythm guitar player. He’s one of the hardest touring artist in Sweden, touring under the pseudonym JOJJE. He also was the lead vocalist in the Swedish melodic rock act SURROUND. The album “Varje steg du tar” did very well in Japan and had great reviews in BURRN!!! Jorgen has been working with Thomas Vikstrom (Talk Of The Town, Therion, Candelmass, Brazen Abbot) whom did all of the harmony vocals on Surround album. Last Autumn’s Dreams vocalists Mikael Erlandsson wrote two of the songs on the album.

First to join HARDCORE CIRCUS was bass player, Nalley Pahlsson (Treat, Last Autumns Dream, Vindictiv, Therion). He brings power to the music and have a great attitude in his playing. Nalley also put the harmony vocals on the album, great voice!!!

Next to join was the super guitarist Carl-Johan Grimmark (Narnia, Rob Rock, Full Force, Saviour Machine & Divinefire). This guy really can play, his soul screams dirty rock n roll and he proves that he can play more than that neo-classic style that made him famous. That’s the line-up of Hardcore Circus!!!

To make everything a little more interesting Mats Levén (Yngwie J Malmsteen, Therion, Treat, Swedish Erotica, Southpaw) added all of the harmony vocals on the album, and what a voice he has, great complement to Jorgen & Nalley’s voices.

The album is recorded, mixed and produced by J.Bloohm & J.Bolmstad at Yokel Studio & Topz Recording Studio and mastered by Classe Persson CRP Recording.

APPEARANCE OF NOTHING’s new album “All Gods are Gone” launched next year

Swiss band Appearance of Nothing was founded 2004 by Pat Gerber (Vocals/Guitar), Yves Lüthi (Drums), Omar Cuna (Bass) and Marc Petralito (Keys). After a short experimental period the band began to write their own songs. Since then Pat and Omar both share the part as lead singers which adds additional variety to the songs.

In 2005 the first self-produced demo Behind Closed Doors was released, which gained a lot of positive reaction, so the band decided, together with their new lead guitarist Peter Berger, to take a big step forward. In 2008 WASTED TIME (ESM174) was released and the band engaged Markus Teske as producer who worked together with famous bands such as “Vanden Plas” and “Symphony X”. What we have with this highly acclaimed release is a very symphonic and highly enjoyable sound that brings together the best elements of Dream Theater, Symphony X, Saga and Vanden Plas. Arrangements are grand and lush with powerful keyboard passages and strutting guitars, all backed with a great rhythm section.

In the years 2008/2009 Appearance of Nothing concentrated on playing headliner shows, as well as shows as supporting act of GURD and at the Swiss RAW festival in front of 4000 people on the main stage.

It’s 2010 and Appearance of Nothing have a new recording: All Gods are Gone. The album has a considerably more aggressive and more modern attitude. Not only the sound but also the collaboration with vocalist Dan Swanö (ex Edge of Sanity/Nightingale). The first track Mirrors Eyes is actually a follow up to the song Man in the Mirror from Wasted Time. This is one seriously good recording, although with a more modern approach this new release should see the band attracting new fans as well as keeping their current fan base more than happy.

A truly epic release.

SEBASTIEN – “Tears Of White Roses”

This Friday, 19.11.2010, Sebastien’s new album hit the “market”.

I put lots of my energy in them because I believe they can wake up the interest abroad and reach the international success.” Roland Grapow

We have just finished our new album! All guests we had organised without any help! We are full of new fresh ideas and with a help of a label we are ready to conquer the metal world!

George Rain & Andy Mons SEBASTIEN origins date back to February 1999.

The first real line-up appears under the name CALYPSO in December 1999.

Two years later the name is changed to NAVAR. In studio “DARK” the first CD “Navar” with songs from the creative workshop of George Rain and Julián Záhorovský (later Czech Pop Idol finalist) is recorded. Then the period of frequent concerts, recording the single “Shine of Light” and finally realization of the second CD “Commotion” occurs.

In summer 2004 the band goes to the studio again to present the new image of NAVAR! It is heavy metal EP “Protivšem”. In April 2006 the new CD “1621” is baptized and self-published, rewarded with many positive reviews (SPARK rock magazine…) and expanded to Japan (with Leviathan Records).

In 2008 two members leave the group… Torso of NAVAR – Rain brothers and Andy Mons – invite new members. The new band is born, known as SEBASTIEN! At the same time George Rain is involved in the preparation of Czech metal opera, FRATERNITAS. New SP “Závidím” is recorded and George Rain and Andy Mons work on the material for the new album…

In November 2009 the band goes to the Grapow Studios (of Roland Grapow – guitarist of Masterplan, ex-Helloween) to record long-promised album “Tears Of White Roses”… Lyrics are written by poet Jan Petriko (he also works for Czech prog-thrashers, ASMODEUS) and songs are written and arranged by George Rain and Andy Mons…

For the first time in the history of rock/metal music you can hear a great, fresh CD with strong melodies and modern sound coming from the heart of Europe, from country small only in its size – Czech Republic. This album shows off seven famous names of favourite artists and is proud to be called the first of its kind on rock/metal scene. No doubt the new rock/metal masterpiece is ready to be served to hungry fans…

Ethereal Blue interview

For the second time on Metal Silvae (you can read their first interview here), Ethereal Blue needs no introduction. Thanks Efthimis for this short interview.

1) Hello Efthimis. In our last interview you told me that you would launch the new album “Essays in Rhyme on Passion and Ethics” in 2009 and this didn’t happened until August 2010. Why have you delayed it?

Hello Razvan thanks for the support. Actually the band is not part of this whole situation with the delays and we want to make this clear. We sent the music to the label a year ago, but due to promotion reasons, some inconsistencies and omissions between our management, Alkemist Fanatix and the label, Casket Music, the album is not officially out yet and the date of its release is the 22nd of November. Hope that everything will go right this time. The good thing is that the band received retail cds five months ago and we can sell it through our official web page www.etherealblue.org

2) Please speak a little about this new album. I’ve seen that you worked with Anestis Goudas for your cover artwork. Is he a fan J? How did you get along with him? I understand that he is quite stubborn on his ideas.

We knew Anestis from a metal webzine he used to own and write some years back. He happens to originate from the city that we first started the band Ioannina-Greece, but we did not know, that he was a graphic designer and actually a good one. This guy works with great Greek and foreign bands like Rotting Christ, Nightfall, members of Dimmu Borgir and many more, so we decided that he was the one we had to work with on the visual part of the album. Indeed, he is quite stubborn on his ideas and with our own guidance I think that we managed to have a very satisfactory visual result. We want to thank him for fully embedding our mentality as a band.

3) When I dropped a picture of you guys on a friend’s desk and asked him what music he thinks you play, he answered … something with Spanish influences, probably something romantic.

I see his point. Actually, his conclusion comes from the band’s photo-shooting, which is closely tied to the album’s title and its lyrical concept. The album is titled “ESSAYS IN RHYME ON PASSION AND ETHICS” and the lyrics are influenced by the ethology of the Greek literature, so we had to look like poets or writers of the 30s. We believe that it was a great idea which goes beyond the wall of metal music and its sometimes narrow-minded views. We have received a lot of criticism on that, but we all are people who can support their views and options. We liked it and we did it.

4) How would you describe your music (except experimental death/black) on this new album?

Our music contains actually everything. Post metal attitudes, long period compositions, Greek rhythmology, black metal passages, death metal aesthetics. It is kind of extreme progressive music. I do not know how to characterize it really, we had the same problem when we were discussing on how to promote the album with the management. If you want my opinion on that, the only thing that matters, when talking about music in general, is being good music no matter which is the music style it represents. The rest is for the music industry and the eventual sales.

5) How was it received by the public? Big sales?

Not big sales actually, since as I told you before, the album is not officially out yet. Two many downloads show that the album attracted the audience’s attention. We receive great feed-back everyday and we want to thank all of you, who keep e-mailing us with a kind word on our spiritual work. This whole situation gives us the strength to go on. Our music is difficult for the typical metal fan but: “worthy hurts and is difficult”. To all of the people out there who will listen the album I would like to force them to give the record 4 or 5 spins before they decide whether it is a diamond or for the rubbish. I am sure that by listening to it more and more, surprises will come up….

6) I’ve seen on your myspace page that you’ve received excellent reviews and high scores from the media. It’s a pity that you’re not invited to play around Europe. Your music would go nicely with our Romanian bands Negură Bunget & DordeDuh.

Actually the press till now has rated the album with 8.5/10 (average)! As far as your remark on our live activity is concerned, I want to be honest with you. We have proposals to play around Europe, but we are not the type of band which earns its living from music. Obviously we can’t leave our everyday jobs and start touring. We are not in our 20s anymore and we have many things at stake in our lives. Everyone becomes very realistic when the bills arrive, we will try to play in some summer festivals in 2011, let’s hope we will make it.

7) I understand that you have big problems with p2p networks and torrent websites where your album is at free download. In my opinion this means that you are a band of interest.

Thanks for your comment. I have no problem with the download, I actually believe that with this financial crisis around, downloading is the only way for music in order to reach greater audiences. The cd prices are expensive and the record labels are seeking new ways to secure their existence. On the other hand, there are matters like intellectual property and musician fees that matter but I think that I will need 30 pages to analyze that part…

8) Do you have plans for a promotion tour in Greece for the album? What are your plans for the near future?

Yes we are going to perform our music live to the major Greek cities for the people that support us. We will play in Athens, Salonica, Ioannina, Larissa and Patra with our good friends Dustynation, a killer progressive band which released its first album some months ago and local bands from these areas. As I told you, we are seeking for some summer festivals and we will play wherever it is possible to go, without living our routine for a long time. During summer we will enter the studio in order to start the creation of our third album based on ideas which come up every day.

9) Here’s the “stupid” question of the interview: Where will you guys celebrate X-mass and New Year’s Eve?

Ha! Me and Panos, our guitarist, will visit Milan and Florence in Italy to nurture our artistic concerns!  The rest of them will stay in Athens and Patra…. What a pity for them 😉

10)   Thanks for this rather short interview and I hope I will see you someday perform live.

We hope to come and play for our Romanian friends soon. Thanks for the support all these years Razvan, we hope to meet you in the flesh someday. Our best wishes to your readers.
